when straightening your hair, the straightener sends ions into your hair, thus causing curly hair to become straight (or something along those lines, i f i were you i would see if someone smarter than me comes along)

It depends on the method you choose. If you use a chemical relaxer, then your hair is reacting to the chemicals in the relaxing agent and loosening. If you use a heat iron, atoms in the cells of your hair are changing composition and causing it to relax.
