I don't think there is anything wrong with Black women straightening their hair, nor do I see anything wrong with a Black woman wearing her hair natural. Your hair is an art, an expression of style, but not so much your ethnicity. I personally don't like it when women who claim to wear their hair natural try and be divisive. Just because you wear your hair natural, it does not make you more or less Black and it doesn't mean you are staying true to your roots. Though, yes there are some Black women who are so infatuated with "white hair", but I rarely see that. I think the good outweighs the bad in this situation. Also, I personally don't like it when Black men try and criticize Black women who straighten their hair when they repeatedly break their neck for a woman with straight hair.

Well I wear my hair natural 90% of the time but I don't use relaxers I just press it out occasionally. I don't think that means you want to be white. However some black girls have a poor mentally about their natural hair and they think that only hair closer to caucasian hair is beautiful hair. Those women that think that long straight is what makes them beautiful and think natural hair is bad are the ones that I can't stand.

My husband is PR and his dad owned a tanning bed. He said he liked the way it felt...relaxing...reminded him of being back in the sun in Puerto Rico. (and he died of cancer, so I wouldn't recommend it)

I'm white and I like to curl my hair....does that mean that I want to be black? Whoever is telling you that needs to learn how to control their ignorance, because that's just ridiculous! I gave up on straightening my hair years ago...it's naturally wavy...it won't stay straight or curly...so I quit fighting...but I never straightened it for any other reason than style...so if someone thinks that it's because someone is trying to be another race...they are very ignorant and closed minded

The tanning flyer...I'll just say that seems like something one of those Ollie girls from sunset tan would do...I'm beginning to think that blond hair bleach shouldn't be exposed to tanning rays...it's making people's brains melt..LOL

Yeah i can completely understand what you're saying..i usually wear my hair natural but i like to wear it straight, curly etc...it doesn't mean i want to be white.... there is no way i want to be white...i love being black, but i like the versatility of my hair and like to try out different styles

Black people wanting to straighten their hair is no more 'wrong' than white people having a perm or having their hair braided. By the same token, I also don't think there is anything intrinsically wrong with people (of whatever skin colour) dyeing their hair, wearing coloured contact lenses or, for that matter, tanning or bleaching their skin. It's down to personal choice. I guess some people would argue that people who want to change their appearance have some sort of an identity problem. I'm sure that is a few cases that is the truth. However that would also suggest that appearance defines a person and I don't believe that.

As to the second part of your question:

I am relatively dark skinned, and I would define myself ethnically as 'black' (if push came to shove). However, that doesn't mean that I don't personally prefer the colour of my skin when I am tanned and so would actively try to promote a tan when in the sun. Having said that, though, I think I'd find it amusing if someone tried to give me a leaflet for a tanning salon as I would assume that really only people who don't have a natural 'tan' would pay to get one when there is no relaxing in the sun involved. The girl who handed you the flyer should be applauded for not making judgements about you based on your skin colour (even if you went round the corner and fell about laughing!)

I imagine you wanna straighten it cos its the fashionable thing to do. I've been doin it off and on for 30+ years.

There's NOTHING wrong with it (it just damages your hair), aside from that, do whatever you like with what you have. All it means is that you wanna look fashionable.

People think I need a tan, too. It doesn't take. I'm melanin challenged. She probably handed you the flyer because its her job, period. If she hands out flyers for a living - thinking isn't her strong suit?

lol yeah....well im black and i do straighten my hair sometimes but i dont wear relaxers so sometimes i wear it in a curly afro or whatever really lol um okay ill try to explain this...

theres a global mental oppression in our society as far as beauty goes. white oppression and influence has left its mark on pretty much everything that has to do with being "universally" pretty, thhat includes hair. i dont think too many people wake up one day and say "i wanna be white.. i nkow lets get a relaxer :D"....its a subconscious thing. the media and society tell us that straighter hair is prettier. so what do we do? we straighten our hair or get relaxers, etc. theres a reason you dont see many people walking around trying to get afros or make their hair bigger/ frizzier or just curly and poofy....but most people dont think about it.

lol tanning? like 80 percent of my school tans its crazy. its kind of iroinic i guess..almost every minority community has issues with being more european yet the white chicks go and get lip injections, tan, even butt implants!!! (ouch)
