make sure your hair is conditioned very well with a good conditioner and if you can let it air dry

also.. wether you air dry or blow dry make sure it is COMPLETELY dry... putting the heating element on damp hair will "fry" the hair shaft

after it is dry use a hair serum with vitamins (preferable) - there are many store brands as well as salon brands.... most kinds will work pretty good or a heat straightening spray to help seal your hair's cuticle so it doesnt dry out as much make sure you use only the highest heat you need to to avoid over drying your hair

and use a ceramic straightner

i use textureline hot style ironing creme (its in a black bottle and you can buy it online or at salons) it works GREAT!
